Recommendations
Shure SM7B Dynamic Vocal Microphone: We have 4 of these here at our studio and I have to admit they get used pretty much on everything recording, particularly vocals. If you are looking for that metal sound that includes screaming and yelling, this is the industry standard for that genre. We often use them for hihats and always throw one in front an amp cabinet when tracking guitar. It is basically a great sounding “swiss army knife” for your studio.
Cloudlifter CL-1 Mic Activator – Ultra-Clean Microphone Preamp Gain: Although we love the Shure SM7B and cannot live without it here in out studio, it can be a pain in but how much gain these things require to get a decent sound. Before we had the Cloudlifter, we used to push our preamp levels hard just to get a clean sound. This would sometimes lead to overdriven or distorted recordings until we saw what the Cloudlifter did for the Shure SM7B signal path.
Shure SM7dB Dynamic Vocal Microphone w/Built-in Preamp: If this modern version would have came out years ago when we were first starting our studio, we would have bought this version. We love the Shure SM7B but dam, does it need a ton of gain to sound good. This version allows you to get that same industry-standard sound without the headache of pushing your preamp past 11!
